(Steve Griffin/The Salt Lake Tribune) By Matt Canham The Salt Lake Tribune Utah's largest gang is far from its most violent, but hard-core members of Straight Edge have a terroristic bent that make them potentially more lethal than traditional street gangs, police say. Ogden police Officer Jeremy Nelson, who spent 10 years in Straight Edge crews along the Wasatch Front, shared his insights at the 14th annual gang conference held Thursday at Sandy's South Towne Expo Center. The conference, which includes sessions on such topics as firearm trafficking, school violence and prison gangs, will conclude today. Hundreds of teenagers in Salt Lake City and Ogden align themselves with the 20-year-old Straight Edge movement, which advocates clean living devoid of smoking, alcohol, drugs and promiscuous sex. The majority of those teens are law abiding, Nelson said, but a violent faction commits crimes in small packs, usually assaults against those who smoke or drink. "They have more numbers than probably any other gang in Utah," said Detective Lex Bell with the metro gang unit. "They have a high potential for future problems." Police began to consider the gang a domestic terrorist group after a series of violent attacks in the mid-to-late 1990s when Straight Edgers firebombed a McDonald's and a leather store, blew up a mink farm and murdered a teenager for smoking in downtown Salt Lake City. More recently they have been tied to numerous beatings, many involving high school students in the Kearns area. The victim is usually a Latino teen, said Bell, who was once associated with Straight Edgers, but was not himself a gang member. Bell said some blame the valley's drug problem on the Latino population, an example of Straight Edge's small-but-growing connection with white supremacist groups. Straight Edge has also become more closely associated with the vegan and animal-rights movements in recent years. In Weber County, police have documented the growth of a group calling itself the "Vegan Militia," but have not connected them with any serious crimes, Nelson said. Much of the Straight Edge scene comes directly from bands that associate themselves with the movement. Straight Edge was spawned by the band Minor Threat in New York in the early 1980s, but the musicians later denounced the movement. Bell has been with the gang unit only for the past three months, but he plans to use his expertise to track the Straight Edge music scene and document the leadership. post comment
